The US commercial market is the first to embrace two innovative telematics devices that use aerospace technology for ground navigation. Among them, WayRay Navion is an augmented reality navigation system that can project holographic GPS images and driver notifications onto the windshield of a car, which is the first of its kind in the automotive aftermarket. The WayRay Element is an intelligent tracking device that plugs into the diagnostic port of any car to monitor driver performance, safety and fuel efficiency. Both solutions are jointly launched by WayRay, a Swiss startup that is committed to the development of telematics technology for connected cars, in conjunction with Orange Business Services, the world's leading telecom operator and IT solution integrator.
Orange Business Services provides wireless connectivity and service management for WayRay's entire US fleet, enabling cars equipped with WayRay Navion and WayRay Element to receive, send, track and display data. The extensive coverage of Orange's international network ensures 24/7 access and quality of service throughout the United States, while allowing WayRay to easily scale to other regions, including Asia and Europe.
WayRay founder and CEO Vitaly Ponomarev said: "These devices represent a huge leap in the concept of connected cars. We have transformed the cutting-edge aerospace technology development in augmented reality and analytics into easy-to-use commercial equipment, and through Orange Business Services. We also cover all the cars in the US. This is a true innovation that can change the way Americans drive their cars, save lives and take us a new step in the direction of self-driving cars."
For the first time, WayRay Navion incorporates true augmented reality into car driving without the need to wear bulky blindfolds and helmets that interfere with our vision. A pico projector mounted on the top of the dashboard projects the holographic image onto the windshield of the car. The image covers the actual road with virtual lines, so the driver does not have to pay close attention to the windshield or embedded GPS. The device's gesture and voice control make for an easy driving experience.
The WayRay Element is essentially a "wearable device for cars." It can plug in the on-board diagnostic (OBD) interface of any car model produced after 1992 to track driver performance, mileage records, cost, fuel consumption, location and overall condition. All of this information is visualized and accessible via a smartphone, tablet or PC. The device also includes an autopilot instructor application that can perform data analysis and provide a variety of ways to improve our driving skills.
Anne-Sophie Lotgering, senior vice president of Europe, Russia and CIS, Orange Business Services, said: "Orange Business Services has a wide range of communication infrastructure and M2M technology, enabling WayRay to offer its innovative connected car to American drivers. We are very Proud to work with WayRay to innovate and redefine the driving experience."
Orange Business Services has proven expertise in the connected car market, providing fixed and mobile connectivity to leading automotive manufacturers and suppliers, including Tesla Motors, Renault Group and PSA Peugeot Citroen. Orange's connected car solutions combine security, navigation, entertainment and travel to provide drivers with a rich and comprehensive driving experience.
