Now, the latest invention at the Fraunhofer Institute means that we are one step closer to realizing true under-the-screen fingerprinting.
Previously, we saw the news that Apple acquired LuxVue, a micro-LED screen technology company. Compared with the latter, the difference between Fraunhofer technology is the integration of high-precision fingerprint scanners on OLED screens. Researchers began researching the technology as early as 2012, but the latest results have reached 1600dpi, a three-fold improvement over the past.
Essentially, this unique new technology uses OLED pixels as a light source to illuminate a finger and then detect and analyze it with reflected light. According to company department manager Bernd Richter, the optical scanner is very thin and light, using the exclusive ultra-thin packaging technology to build the fingerprint sensor into the screen. And the distance between the finger and the image sensor is minimized, so that the fingerprint data can be captured more accurately. Therefore, this technology does not require additional imaging optics.
The most impressive thing is that although it is very thin, this high resolution can determine the minimum to the level of the pores, which means that the OLED under-screen recognition technology is very safe. It is important to know that optical fingerprint scanning is the most primitive method of fingerprint recognition. Since it has been scanned for optical images, it is not difficult to implement. The new technology of the Fraunhofer Institute officially solved this major shortcoming.
